Returning to the Archive: Writing Scent Fair Austin

March 27, 2026

After another year of developing Scent Fair Austin, Barrio Pop Studio returns to writing. What began as an exhibition and marketplace has expanded into an ongoing body of research and documentation, now continuing on barriopopstudio.com. The blog reemerges as a site of inquiry where scent, material culture, and contemporary craft are not only exhibited, but examined through writing.

Over the past year, Scent Fair Austin has taken shape as a platform grounded in olfaction as both medium and method. The inaugural edition, presented at Future Front House in Austin, convened artists working across wax, incense, and botanical installations. The project has since extended beyond a single event, shaping an approach to exhibition-making that considers how scent structures memory, perception, and collective experience. The fair will return in November 2027 with expanded programming and new commissions.

This return to writing was catalyzed by conversations at SXSW 2026, including Jane Fonda’s remarks on the First Amendment and her call for artists as agents of activism, alongside panels on exhibition design and olfactory intelligence. These exchanges reinforced the role of writing as a necessary extension of curatorial practice.

This moment also marks the launch of Barrio Pop Studio on Substack, establishing a parallel platform for publishing research, artist features, and ongoing reflections. https://substack.com/@barriopopstudio
